Two More British World Champions

Jenson Button - 2009 F1 World ChampionWe’re feeling compelled, this morning, to send out our congratulations to Jenson Button and Beth Tweddle after Britain gained another two world champions in the weekend’s sporting events.

Jenson Button started the Brazilian Grand Prix down in 15th position on the grid but performed some astonishing overtaking manoeuvres in the first few laps to eventually finish fifth on the day and stretch his lead to an unassailable 15 points with just one race to go until the end of the season. Button succeeds Brit Lewis Hamilton as Formula One World Champion, the first time in 40 years that Britain has had back-to-back champions in F1.

The championship is especially sweet for Button as, after nine years of F1 racing, he was nearly left without a team at the start of this season when Honda pulled out of the competition. The team was eventually rescued by F1 veteran Ross Brawn who, along with Button and team mate Rubens Barrichello, also secured the constructors’ title this weekend.

Beth Tweddle - 2009 World Gymnastics ChampionBritain’s other triumph came at the World Gymnastics Championships being held at the O2 in London, where Beth Tweddle won gold in the floor event.

Having failed to make the final of her favourite event, the uneven bars, after a nasty fall, Beth cruised to victory gaining the highest difficulty score of the day for her floor routine. Her win, and outstanding performance has sparked renewed speculation about whether or not she will compete at the 2012 Olympics in London. At 24, Beth is already competing beyond the age that most female gymnasts retire, but has stated that while she’s still enjoying the sport and is able to challenge for titles, she will keep going.
