Sports fan or not, mention has to be made of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt who smashed the 100m world record last night with a time of 9.58 seconds. This is the third time that Bolt has broken the world record for the event after originally knocking compatriot Asafa Powell off the top spot in May 2008 and then breaking his own record in the Olympic final in Beijing last August.
The 0.11 seconds by which the record was broken is the largest margin by which the record has fallen in one go since 1921 when American Charlie Paddock reduced the time from 10.6 seconds to 10.4 seconds (in the days when times were only measured to the nearest tenth of a second).
Bolt also holds the world record for the 200m sprint (also set at the Beijing Olympics) in which he competes again tomorrow, so watch out for another record-breaking run then.
